| Burmese refugees need instruments, bikes
Londoners touched by the plight of a new community of refugees from Burma have been overwhelming the citys Cross Cultural Learner Centre with offers of donations, said its executive director. But the Karen community, accustomed to simple life in a refugee camp, have already been equipped with enough clothing and household items to get them started in London, said Mary Williamson. We are so thankful, and the families are very thankful, bur right now they have what they need, she said. The only items the Cross Cultural Learner Centre would welcome now are instruments especially guitars and pianos and possibly bicycles or wheelchairs. The 17 families arrived in London at the end of November, and stayed at the centre for a few weeks before taking residence in apartments around the city.
Teams compete as planned at closed Pahaska - By Amber Peabody
The closing of Pahaska Tepee has caused some difficulties, but the Cody High School Nordic ski meet will go on this weekend.“It's part of the nature of Nordic skiing that we're adaptable and self-sufficient," coach Marty Stannard said. “We go to some places where there are no lodges to begin with." More than 150 athletes, along with parents and coaches, will come to Cody for the meet. Many of those people would have had lunch and gotten warm in the lodge during the day.“It's a nice feature when hosting a race," Stannard said. “Now we're dealing with the facilities aspect of things.Since the lodge closed a few weeks ago, the Park County Nordic Ski Association's portable toilets have seen a great increase in use.“It's costing the PCNSA thousands of dollars in upkeep," Stannard said.
Stronger road to Fort Pickens could keep park accessible, bring ...
When the campaign was under way in the 1960s to create Gulf Islands National Seashore, to include Fort Pickens, supporters pledged to keep the park accessible to the public. That still has to be a guiding principle. The problem lies in guaranteeing public access without doing things that go against the park's other prime directive: preserving the natural resource that brings people there in the first place, and protecting its rich natural habitat for wildlife. Before Hurricane Ivan, visits to the park had topped one million a year, making it one of the top national park destinations in the country. And that level of visitation has made the park an integral piece of the local economy.Trying to provide that level of access without a road would be a challenge, to say the least. But the road has proven repeatedly vulnerable to hurricanes.
